At St. Anne’s School we have a considerable number of pupils who speak English as an additional language, with over fifty different languages spoken throughout the school. We pride ourselves on the diversity of our school community and the subsequent richness of our school culture. Days and events specifically aimed at celebrating our diversity are held. As part of the Hampshire Young Interpreters Scheme we operate a buddy system for new arrivals which helps pupils to integrate quickly. More established EAL pupils are given the opportunity to become part of this scheme. A new venture this year is the Creative Conversation Club which encourages early stage EAL pupils to be creative and practise their English at the same time.
A weekly one to one intervention session is provided by our specialist team for those who are relatively new to the English language. All teachers can access the recommendations made by the team. We are very proud of the achievements made by all of our pupils and we are dedicated to ensuring that children from all backgrounds are given the opportunity to grow and reach their full potential.
