BTEC Information Technology

Introduction

This course will give you the strong foundation subject knowledge and practical experience of IT in today’s ever changing digital world and equip you to be a digital savvy.

You will have a mixture of portfolio work and scenario based tasks to complete which are relevant to you, society and the world of IT in business to help you build the right employable skills.

Today’s BTEC Nationals are demanding, as you would expect of the most respected applied learning qualification in the UK. You will have to choose and complete a range of units, be organised, take some assessments that we will set and mark, and keep a portfolio of your assignments. But you can feel proud to achieve a BTEC because, whatever your plans in life – whether you decide to study further, go on to work or an apprenticeship, or set up your own business – your BTEC National will be your passport to success in the next stage of your life. What can it lead onto?

  • When taken alongside other Level 3 qualifications such as A Levels in business studies, mathematics, physics, science, arts or technology, the qualification gives learners the opportunity to progress to a degree in an IT discipline or a degree where IT related skills and knowledge may be advantageous.
  • This qualification supports entry to, for example:

o   HNC in Travel and Tourism Management

o   HND in Art and Design

o   HND in Business

o   BSc (Hons) in Fashion Buying Management

o   BSc (Hons) in Physical Geography.          

o   Vocational apprenticeship roles and trainee/entry-level roles, such as roles in help desk support, help desk analysis and account management.

  • Some university courses may require the achievement of specific units and learners should always check the entry requirements for degree programmes with specific higher education providers.
  • 5 GCSEs at grades C or 4 to include English Language and Maths at Grade 4 or above
  • It would be advantageous if IT or Computing has been taken at GCSE.

Course Summary

Year 1: BTEC Certificate:

  • Equivalent to an AS level
  • 2 units:

o   Creating Systems to Manage Information (assessed externally through a set task) - Learners study the design, creation, testing and evaluation of a relational database system to manage information.

o   Using Social Media in Business (assessed internally through set tasks) - Learners explore how businesses use social media to promote their products and services. Learners also implement social media activities in a business to meet requirements.

Year 2: BTEC Extended Certificate:

  • Equivalent to an A Level
  • 4 units – 3 compulsory and one optional. To include units above plus:

o   Information Technology and Systems (assessed externally through an exam)

o   Data Modelling  OR Unit 6: Website Development (assessed internally through a set task)
